Fan's Eye View ~ NASCAR Fans... What Do You Want?
1/23/2014
Jim Fitzgerald
This will probably be the shortest column I have ever written, but that's okay, because this one isn't about what I have to say, it's about what YOU have to say.
Last Friday, motorsports journalist Jim Utter broke a story about NASCAR very seriously considering changing the Chase format again. I, like Partner PattyKay here at Race Fans Forever, will not go into the details of the announcement or the proposed plan, simply because it has been announced and spun out so many times that I’m sure your head is spinning like a race fan on a swivel chair in the infield at Bristol. What is evident is that NASCAR has realized that something is wrong, and the sanctioning body is looking to make changes to right the ship.
It is no secret…actually, I’ll come out and reaffirm it. If it weren’t for the voices of the fans, I’d really have nothing to write about. If I had an original thought, it would die a slowly, lonely death, then dry up and fall out of one of my ears one day while I was sleeping. Yes, I listen to the fans, and they inspire me to write what I write. So, that said…
Since last Friday, I have been, of course, listening to the fans. You, fans, are loud again--…well, you’re loud most of the time, but this is the offseason, news is slow, and someone went ahead and feathered your ruffles. Through blogs, radio call-in shows, articles…I’ve been around for a few days just listening and soaking in the comments made by those with the means to do so. The verdict is in, and…well…in regards to these proposed--, I'll rephrase for clarity--, unconfirmed and rumored changes to the methods used to determine a Champion, you’re still not happy?
So….what do you want?
No, really, tell me…WHAT DO YOU WANT? There’s a comment section at the bottom of every one of the articles here on Race Fans Forever. That’s because we recognize that you, the fan, are one of us, and you probably have something important to say about the sport that you love, or loved, so much. I beg you to use that comments, section. Hell, I’ll even DARE you. If you want to be heard, grab the microphone, step up on the stage and sing, as loud and for as long as you want. This is an open forum, and we’re open a Jeff Gordon’s worth of hours per day, and a Michael Annett’s worth of days per week. We never close.
NASCAR Fans…What Do You Want? When it comes to how we determine the Champion of the Premier Series, and, honestly, call it what you want, Grand National, Winston Cup, Sprint Cup, whatever…I don’t take off for spelling, and no answer is too early, too late, or too silly. When it comes to determining a Champion in the highest series in NASCAR, what do you want to see? How do you want it to be?
NASCAR has shown that they are willing to make changes. Tell them what you want. How should the Cup Series Champion be determined? Speak now.
